THE AGE OF THE ENABLE

The recent gentrification of the area is but the latest stage in the borough’s varied history. With its own prison, common and tributary of the Thames, Wandsworth has many characteristics of a town within the city. Indeed, the Wandle was once the busiest river of its size in the country.

The Brazilian wood mills of the 16th century produced a red dye which the Huguenots developed when they established a hat industry on arriving in Britain in the late 1600s. The secret formula was so much in demand for the hats of the cardinals in Rome.

Among older buildings, the Friends Meeitng House dates from While St Anne’s church is an impressive Grecian temple on its hill, More up to date and SW18 Wansdsworth has one of the best town halls in London completed in 1937.

Wansdworth is notable for being the start (or end) of the Surrey Iron railway of the early 1800s. Horse drawn but still the first public railway in the world.
